Climate Action Committee

On December 3, 2019 the City Council adopted a City Council Resolution declaring a climate emergency and committing to ongoing actions to restore a safe environment. The Climate Action Committee includes a cross-section of community members from all sectors working together to create a recommendation to the City Council on specific actions.

The Climate Action Committee has regular monthly meetings on the 2nd Tuesday of each month (3:30 pm-5:00 pm – see Meetings Tab)

Current Climate Action Committee Members

The Climate Action Committee will consist of seven (7) members: One (1) City Councilmember and six (6) members with one or more of the following experience/characteristics, with a majority of members having a climate background:

  • One City Councilmember
  • Youth Representative (ages 17-23)
  • Climate Change Background
  • Sebastopol Business Owner
  • Local Climate Action Group
  • Environmental Justice & Equity Background
  • Rights of Nature Background
  • Energy
  • Transportation

Duties of Climate Action Committee

  • Prioritize actions from Sebastopol’s Climate Action Framework Appendix A 
  • Update Climate Action Framework (CAF) as needed, and satisfy responsibilities as assigned to the Committee in the adopted CAF
  • Engage in public education and outreach regarding climate issues 
  • Advise City Council & Planning Commission on meaningful policy options for meeting equity-centered city climate goals
  • Recommend actions to City Council for advancing state, national, and international level climate goals

The Climate Action Committee (also known as the CAC) meets 2nd Tuesday of each month from 3:30 p.m. – 5:00 p.m.

Applying compost is one of many things you can do for the climate, it helps build soil health while retaining water! The free compost events are provided by the Sebastopol Climate Action Committee, the City of Sebastopol, Zero Waste Sonoma, and Napa Recycling & Waste Services.

SB1383 Education

Senate Bill 1383, which went into effect in January 2022, requires that all California residents and businesses separate organic materials from the garbage so that they can be composted. All homes and businesses should now have a green bin for compostable materials.
