Library Closure

The Library was proactively closed to the public on Thursday June 4 after a staff member observed peeling wallpaper in the Staff Work Room and Teen Reading Area. Library staff opened sections of the walls in the affected areas after investigating peeling and other signs of moisture intrusion. During that process, mold was discovered within the wall cavities. To assess the situation, specialists, including a certified environmental testing firm and laboratory, were retained to conduct mold and indoor air quality testing on June 5. The results of that testing are being used to guide the appropriate remediation and repair efforts.

The City of Sebastopol continues to investigate and remediate moisture intrusion, mold contamination, and structural deterioration discovered within portions of the Sebastopol Library building. Initial environmental testing confirmed elevated mold levels in the Staff Work Room and Teen Reading Area. While testing did not identify elevated airborne mold levels in common areas, subsequent investigations found elevated moisture levels within exterior wall assemblies throughout the building. Further remediation work revealed significant dry rot and structural deterioration in portions of the exterior wall framing.

On July 7, 2026, the City Council ratified approximately $47,700 in emergency testing and remediation costs and authorized up to $175,000 for Phase II remediation and investigative demolition. The full extent of the damage remains unknown until additional wall assemblies are opened and evaluated. For that reason, the City cannot yet provide a final estimate for total repair costs.
