Roof gutters, downspouts, and storm drains must not connect to sewer system
March 3, 2026, City News
The City would like to remind all property owners that roof gutters, downspouts, and other stormwater drains must not drain into or be connected to the sewer system. As stated in section 13.08.070, subsection A, of the City’s municipal code, connecting these drains to the sewer system is prohibited as it allows rainwater to enter pipes that are designed for wastewater from homes and businesses. During heavy rain this extra water can potentially overwhelm the wastewater system leading to backups, flooding, and damage to critical infrastructure. This additional water is also pumped to the treatment center in Santa Rosa which incurs additional costs to the City and ratepayers.
All stormwater drainage should be directed to appropriate areas such as landscaped areas or stormwater drains. If you are unsure whether your property’s drainage is correctly setup, or if you need any guidance on drainage options, please reach out to the City’s Public Works Department at (707) 823-5331.
Thank you for helping protect our infrastructure and waterways!
